Editor’s note: This practical cleaning guide has been rewritten around safe, repeatable service steps.
When to replace the interface
Replace thermal interface material when the cooler is removed, when the material is contaminated or damaged, or when the equipment maker’s service instructions require it. A temperature problem can also come from mounting, airflow, fan control or a blocked cooler, so replacing paste alone is not a diagnosis.
Removal checklist
- Shut down the system, disconnect power and allow the assembly to cool.
- Remove the cooler without twisting against the processor or board.
- Use a lint-free wipe and an appropriate cleaning method to remove the old material from both mating surfaces.
- Keep liquid away from sockets, contacts and exposed electronics. Let the surfaces dry completely.
Fresh application
- Check whether the cooler has pre-applied material.
- Use only the material and amount specified for the interface.
- Lower the cooler straight down and tighten the mount evenly according to its manual.
- Never apply fresh material over old material, and do not reuse material after separating the mating surfaces.
For a non-electrically-conductive grease option, review Maxtor CTG8. For a gap that requires a pad, review AP-14 instead.
