Editor’s note: This older liquid-cooling article has been rewritten as an interface-selection checklist. It is not a current review of any third-party cooler or display product.
Water-block contact still needs a defined interface
An AIO or custom water block transfers heat through its base, but the processor-to-base interface still needs the material specified for that assembly. A larger radiator, a pump feature or a display does not determine which thermal material is correct.
Before mounting a water block
- Confirm socket compatibility, bracket orientation and mounting pressure.
- Check whether the block has pre-applied material.
- Clean the processor heat spreader and block base before applying fresh material.
- Use only the amount and material type specified by the equipment and material instructions.
Service and diagnosis
If temperatures change after installation, check pump or fan operation, mounting contact, airflow and ambient conditions before changing material. If the block is removed, clean and reapply fresh interface material as required.
For a conventional processor grease interface, review CTG8. If the assembly has a measured gap, review AP-14 thermal pad options instead.
