Intel LGA1200 Coolers May Inefficiently Spread Thermal Paste Across Alder Lake CPUs

November 16, 2021

Editor’s note: This 2021 socket topic is retained for reference, but the current processor and cooler manuals must take priority.

Why interface geometry matters

A cooler must make the contact area, mounting pressure and interface thickness work together. A cooler designed for one socket or package can mount incorrectly on another, even when the processor appears similar. Do not rely on a historical article or a product photo to confirm fit.

Before installing a cooler

  • Check the current processor installation guide and the cooler’s socket list.
  • Confirm the backplate, standoffs, bracket orientation and tightening sequence.
  • Check whether the cooler includes factory-applied material. Do not add a second layer.
  • Confirm the heat spreader or die contact area and choose grease, pad or phase-change material accordingly.

What to do if contact looks uneven

Power down and inspect the mount, hardware and interface imprint. An uneven imprint can indicate wrong hardware, interference, a bowed component or an unsuitable material thickness. Correct the mechanical cause before changing products.

For current Maxtor material selection, review Technical Help with the socket or module, contact dimensions, mounting method and temperature range.
